Portable Electronic DevicesLaptops, iPads and smart phones are must-have items in many workplaces - they keep us connected when we are away from the office.

What exactly can I package?

You could salary package one laptop or portable electronic device per year if it is used primarily for work-related purposes.

The Australian Tax Office (ATO) describes a portable electronic device as an item which is small and light, easily portable and designed for use away from the office, can operate without an external power supply and is designed as a complete unit.

The items you can package under this benefit include:

  • laptop or notebook computers
  • mobile phones and accounts
  • PDAs, electronic diaries and palm pilots
  • portable printers.

Before salary packaging any of these items, your employer must confirm it is used for work-related purposes more than 50 per cent of the time.

To salary package a device and avoid incurring FBT, you need to keep a daily record of your usage for one month during a three year period after you purchase the device.

Are iPads included?

Yes. You can salary package an iPad as a portable electronic device, as long as it is primarily used for work-related purposes. You must have your employer's confirmation and provide a usage diary.

Who can package this?

Most employees are eligible to salary package a laptop or portable electronic device. Refer to your Employer's Information Booklet from the My Employer Hub to ensure your employer offers this benefit.
