What expenses does Meal Entertainment cover?
Ordinarily your RemServ Wallet card can be used to pay for your restaurant and bistro bills whenever you're dining out with others. Obviously if restaurants and pubs are closed, like they are now during COVID-19, you're unable to do this.
The good news is the ATO is now allowing some takeaway and home delivered meals for our Meal Entertainment customers until the end of the next FBT year which is 31 March, 2021.
Until then, you can use your RemServ Wallet card for takeaway and home delivered meals when purchased from restaurants that would normally accept your RemServ Wallet card, if you were able to dine in.
This includes some meals ordered through delivery platforms such as Deliveroo, Menulog and Uber Eats, where they deliver for the permitted restaurants.
FAQs on the new takeaway and home delivery provisions:
Can I use my RemServ Wallet card for take-away, home delivery etc.?
Yes, the ATO has temporarily relaxed taxation rules around Meal Entertainment and is now allowing takeaway and home delivered meals.
How does it work?
Your RemServ Wallet card can now be used for takeaway/delivery as long as the supplier was an allowable Meal Entertainment supplier as of 1 March 2020.
Please note the change will allow takeaway and home delivered meals to be purchased from restaurants that would normally accept your RemServ Wallet card, if you were able to dine in.
Can I use my RemServ Wallet card with delivery services?
Yes. This includes some meals ordered through delivery platforms such as Deliveroo, Menulog and Uber Eats, where they deliver for the permitted restaurants.
I have used my RemServ Wallet card to purchase takeaway using Uber Eats previously but it has declined or the transaction was taken from my Living Expenses benefit, what has changed?
In line with the recent announcement by the ATO we have enabled these delivery services to now come through as Meal Entertainment transactions.
When does this change come into effect?
This change is effective 1 March 2020 and will be applicable until 31 March 2021.
What is my Meal Entertainment cap limit?
Effective from 1 April 2017, a single annual cap limit of $2,650 ($5,000 ‘grossed-up’) will apply to Meal Entertainment and Venue Hire benefits. This new limit is a combined cap across both benefits applicable each Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) year (from 1 April to 31 March the following year)
What does ‘grossed-up’ value mean?
The grossed-up taxable value of a benefit is the salary that employees would have to earn in order to purchase the benefit from after-tax dollars. The grossed-up value of these benefits combined would be $5,000. However, the actual dollar amount that customers can spend per FBT year for both benefits combined is $2,650.
Who can package Meal Entertainment?
You can salary package Meal Entertainment if you work for a:
- private or public not-for-profit hospital
- charity or other not-for-profit organisation
and your employer offers this as part of your workplace benefits program.
